Where to stay in Évora: best boutique & historic hotels

Évora is one of my absolute favourite places in Portugal. I make a point to visit the sun-drenched capital of the Alentejo region at least once a year. It’s only a 90-minute drive or direct train ride from Lisbon, making it an effortless weekend escape or easy anchor for an Alentejo adventure or road trip to Seville.

When deciding where to stay, Évora is much smaller and more compact than cities like Lisbon or Porto. You don’t need to worry about picking between neighbourhoods. Essentially, you have three choices:

1. Inside the medieval town walls (Old Town): Évora has a huge historic centre of whitewashed, yellow-trimmed buildings set on skinny cobblestone streets and surrounded by ancient walls. I love to stay within as you’re just steps from the Roman temple, great restaurants, lively plazas etc. 
2. Just outside the walls: There are a handful of larger hotel chains located *just* beyond the city walls with easy parking.
3. Countryside estates: Stay a quick 5- to 10-minute drive outside the centre among olive groves, vineyards or serene countryside retreats with space to unwind.

Where to stay in Évora – my experiences

Having visited Évora countless times – by car, by train, and in almost every season of the year – I’ve experienced this ancient city from just about every angle. Over the years, I’ve stayed in everything from cosy Airbnbs and family-run guesthouses to gorgeous, high-end historic hotels.

One thing I’ve learned early on is that navigating Évora’s medieval core with a car is an absolute nightmare. Parts of the old town are a maze of skinny cobblestone streets and tight turns. My best advice? Avoid a drive through the centre. Instead, leave your car in one of the easy, spacious parking areas located just outside the ancient town walls. Because the entire old town is exceptionally walkable, you can park stress-free and explore everything on foot.

• For 1 to 2 nights: I strongly recommend staying inside the city walls (or right at one of the main gates). This keeps you within a 5-minute walk of Évora’s bustling plazas, tascas and sights so you can maximise your time.
• For 3 to 7 nights: Consider booking a countryside estate (herdade or quinta) just outside town. Évora is the perfect launch pad for day trips to Monsaraz and Corval, Arraiolos, Estremoz or world-class Alentejo wineries.

1. M’AR De AR Aqueduto (I’ve stayed here!)

This 5-star hotel gives a modern update to a beautifully restored 16th-century convent at the edge of the old town. M’AR De AR Aqueduto sits right beside one of Évora’s historic city gates and – as the name hints – overlooks the historic Água de Prata Aqueduct.

For me, this location hits the absolute sweet spot. Because it’s situated right at the city gate, you get the best of both worlds: you can stroll to the main square (Praça do Giraldo) and all major sights within minutes, but parking for free just outside the town walls is easy and hassle-free. This makes it effortless to jump in the car for wine tastings or day trips around the countryside without navigating narrow medieval streets.

• The vibe: Modern, airy luxury built over historic architectural bones like original stone arches and vaulted ceilings.
• The room: My room was massive, featuring garden and aqueduct views. Huge bed with a great choice of pillows.
• The pool & bar: The outdoor pool area is super lush and surrounded by green lawns. I visited in November, so I was a bit disappointed the weather wasn’t warm enough for a proper pool day, but I made up for it by relaxing in the cozy hotel bar with a glass of Alentejo red.
• Best for: Couples, groups of friends and road-trippers who want 5-star comfort with easy driving access.

2. Pousada Convento de Évora

Across Portugal you’ll find properties called pousadas – these are state-owned historic palaces, castles and convents that have been transformed into stunning hotels (currently managed by the Pestana group). You step back in time and it’s such a buzz to stay in these really special historic places.

The one in Évora is set inside the 15th-century Lóios Convent and mixes old and new, with a huge outdoor swimming pool and rooms set within the old monk’s cells. It’s located right in the historic heart of the city – directly adjacent the Roman Temple and the Évora Cathedral.

• The vibe: 5-star historic convent-turned-hotel with grand cloistered courtyards, antique tiles and vaulted monastery arches.
• The rooms: Each room is adapted from original monk cells, making them all unique.
• The facilities: There’s an outdoor pool with plenty of sunloungers, a restaurant serving Alentejo cuisine and a bar to socialise.
• Best for: History and heritage lovers or couples who want an atmospheric stay in the heart of the city.

3. CICIOSO Boutique Hotel

I love boutique hotels set in historic buildings, and CICIOSO is a special one. This guesthouse has taken over a stunning early 20th-century manor house in the old town, with a renovation bringing a modern touch to Alentejano style.

It has everything you want from a hotel – daily cleaning, 24/7 help, breakfast, food service and concierge, but in a boutique format. Shared spaces include a heated pool (!!), a tea room, patio, winter garden, lounge and dining room. 

It’s one of the best hotels in Évora as it offers a peaceful, intimate contrast to the larger convent hotels. 

• The vibe: A smaller property offering thoughtful, highly personalised hospitality. Intimate, design-forward and calm – think warm neutral tones, natural textiles and clean lines.
• The rooms: 9 suites and 6 studios. Luxury linens and towels, a coffee machine, air conditioning and TVs. Studios all have a kitchenette too.
• The facilities: Heated pool, lots of communal spaces, 
• Best for: Solo travellers and couples looking for a chic, quiet boutique base within walking distance of everything.

4. MouraSuites Hotel

This 4-star Évora hotel sits within a restored 15th-century noble manor home, just steps from a quiet plaza, Largo das Portas de Moura, with its impressive white marble Renaissance fountain.

Location wise, you’re just a few minutes’ walk from all the sights. In terms of the hotel, a renovation has transformed the space into spacious suites with high-end modern amenities while still retaining the original character of the building. Perhaps the best feature? Free on-site private parking.

• The vibe: Renovated manor house turned boutique guesthouse. Large enough to offer comforts and features but small enough to feel boutique.
• The rooms: 24 rooms and spacious suites, some overlooking the pool. All rooms have sound-proof windows, rainfall showers and a mini bar. There’s a pillow menu for extra comfort. 
• The facilities: Outdoor saltwater pool, gym, free private parking, laundry, transfer service, restaurant and bar (which actually looks quite good), breakfast.
• Best For: Families or travellers who want extra living space and a pool without staying outside the city centre.

5. Palácio Diana Guest House (budget pick)

This budget-friendly guesthouse offers spotlessly clean, modern rooms in the heart of Évora’s old town. If you’re an unfussy traveller looking for a chic but no-frills stay with Wi-Fi, air conditioning and private bathrooms, check your dates for Palácio Diana.

While the rooms have been recently renovated, the building still offers historic charm and the self-check-in process makes it easy to access. The downside of this property is there is no elevator if you’re staying on the upper floors – and you’re so central it would be impossible to park a car close by. While you won’t get breakfast each morning, there’s a shared lounge and roof terrace to enjoy within the historic family-owned residence.

• The vibe: historic building turned chic guesthouse with self check-in.
• The rooms: Simple, spotlessly clean with private bathrooms.
• The facilities: Shared lounge and roof terrace. No elevator or parking. 
• Best for: Budget-conscious travellers who want character, history and simple hospitality.

6. M’AR De AR Muralhas (best for families)

The 4-star sister property to M’AR De AR Aqueduto, Muralhas is a spacious hotel built directly against Évora’s 14th-century city walls. You’ll stay near the southern gate and enjoy a huge pool area and garden that feels more like a resort than a city-centre hotel!

But the best feature for families is the kid’s club, a safe space for children to enjoy creative activities, games, a climbing wall and more.

• The vibe: Relaxed, resort-style comfort with expansive green gardens walkable to downtown Évora.
• The rooms: All 85 double rooms and 6 suites were renovated in 2025, giving the hotel a total refresh.
• The facilities: Swimming pools for adults and for kids, gardens, a kid’s club, laundry service and a restaurant.
• Best for: Families and summer visitors looking for a full-service hotel with ample outdoor relaxation space and a kid’s club to entertain little ones.

Quintas and estates to book just outside of Évora

For a longer stay – or if you dream of waking up with views of a cliché Alentejo landscape of rolling olive groves, sprawling vineyards and cork trees as far as the eye can see – consider a more expansive estate beyond the city limits. The area surrounding Évora is dotted with beautifully restored historic quintas (country estates) and luxury farm-hotels.

These spots offer a slow Alentejo escape complete with swimming pools, farm-to-table dining and wide open starry skies. Staying within a 5- to 15-minute drive of Évora means easy parking and day trips to explore wineries and nearby villages.

• Convento do Espinheiro –  A lavish 15th-century convent turned 5-star luxury resort set among 20 acres of gardens, complete with a spa, wine cellar, gym and outdoor pool.
• A Casa do Governador – A centennial country house featuring rustic-chic decor, open fields and two pools just 3 km from town.

Practical tips for visiting Évora

• Getting there: Évora is roughly 90 minutes from Lisbon via the A6 highway. Direct trains also run regularly from Lisbon’s Oriente and Sete Rios stations. Évora is an easy car-free destination if you stay in the old town.
• Navigating & parking: Driving inside Évora’s old town walls can be tricky due to narrow, one-way medieval streets. I recommend choosing a hotel near the city gates (like M’AR De AR Aqueduto) or only driving through to drop off luggage. You can park overnight in the large public lots just outside the walls and walk in.
• How many nights: 1 to 2 nights is ideal to explore Évora’s major highlights – including the Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos), the Roman Temple and the Cathedral. You could stay longer and use Évora as a base to explore other towns in the surrounding Alentejo countryside, or go wine tasting.
